Good design is holistic design
I believe that good design is focused on innovation, and innovation requires a holistic approach. It means looking left and right; keeping an eye on trends and competitors, but also similar designs your colleagues are working on. And it means looking backward and forward; gathering data and properly map out user journeys, while daring to dream and create a vision to work towards. Because in the end you want to solve problems, not endlessly fight symptoms.
Smart is beautiful
Every product is part of a story and by understanding that story you can integrate that product seamlessly in someone’s live. That starts with a proper understanding of the end-to-end journey of a customer and then leveraging technology to give a customer what they need at the right time. That’s how products become beautiful, by making them smart.
Designing is aligning
As a designer you work together with a lot of different people and even more stakeholders are involved. It’s absolutely paramount to proactively make sure that there is a common understanding, expectations are aligned and everybody is on the same page throughout the design process. It’s the only way to make your process reach the desired results.
Apply UX internally
Many times processes within the organization aren’t reviewed and improved once they are in place. This is a shame because there are easy ways to improve the work efficiency by introducing a template or making certain agreements. Everywhere I worked, I’ve always created side projects to improve the effectiveness of design and collaboration across the company. Why not improve our own working experience?
Feedback is life
Good constructive feedback is the water that makes any idea grow. I mean, yes, we designers are pretty great but we are still mere mortals. And I’m not just talking about feedback from your users, it already starts with a minute from your colleague to give you a sanity check. That’s why also always make time for my colleagues to help them out with constructive feedback when needed.
